In a direct response to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), D.K. Shivakumar, a prominent Congress leader from Karnataka, has rejected the BJP’s claims that he had suggested altering the Indian Constitution to provide reservations for Muslims. The BJP had accused Shivakumar of making such remarks during a public speech, which they interpreted as a proposal for constitutional changes.

Shivakumar, in his rebuttal, stated that he had never proposed any constitutional amendment regarding reservations for Muslims. He clarified that his comments were part of a larger discussion on the need for affirmative action policies to support marginalized communities across all religions. According to Shivakumar, his intention was not to divide communities but to ensure that all disadvantaged groups, including Muslims, receive fair treatment and opportunities.

The Congress leader also criticized the BJP for using such claims as a political tool to undermine his credibility and create rifts among different communities. Shivakumar pointed out that any changes to the Constitution would require extensive discussions and legal processes, not hasty political statements.

The BJP’s ongoing campaign against Shivakumar is seen as an effort to create a wedge issue in Karnataka politics, particularly with the upcoming state elections in mind. Shivakumar’s clarification, however, highlights his commitment to the Constitution and social justice for all.
